Why Some Videos Cannot Be Downloaded
Private posts, age restrictions, region locks, live streams and DRM each fail for a different reason. What each error means and which ones you can do something about.
When a link fails, the message is often generic while the underlying cause is specific. Knowing which category a failure belongs to tells you immediately whether it is worth retrying, and most of them are not.
The common causes
- The post is private or restricted. If the content is visible only to followers, to a closed group, or to no one at all, it cannot be retrieved. A post that opens for you in a browser where you are signed in may still be private to everyone else. Test the link in a private browsing window: if it does not load there, it will not download.
- Age-restricted content. Platforms gate some material behind an age check that requires a signed-in account. Without that session there is no way to reach the file, and the request fails at the platform rather than at the downloader.
- The video was removed. Deleted by the uploader, taken down after a copyright claim, or removed for a policy breach. The link may still exist and the page may still load, but nothing is behind it.
- Region restrictions. Rights are frequently licensed by territory, particularly for music and sport. The same link can work in one country and fail in another, which is why a video a friend can open may be unavailable to you.
- Live streams. A stream in progress has no finished file to fetch. Many platforms publish a recording once the broadcast ends, and that recording can usually be handled normally.
- DRM protection. Content from subscription services is encrypted, and the decryption keys are deliberately withheld from anything other than the official player. This is a hard technical and legal boundary, not a limitation that better tooling overcomes.
Temporary failures worth retrying
Not every failure is permanent. Platforms change how their pages are built without notice, and extraction tools need updating to match. They also apply rate limits when they see many requests from one address in a short period, which produces errors mentioning bot detection or asking you to sign in.
These usually clear on their own. Waiting a few minutes and trying again is genuinely worthwhile for this category, and is a waste of time for every category in the previous section.
Checking a failing link
- Open the link in a private browsing window. If it does not load without your session, it is private or age-restricted.
- Confirm the URL points at a single video rather than a playlist, a channel or a profile page.
- Remove any extra parameters after the video identifier, particularly playlist and timestamp fragments.
- If the video is live, wait for the broadcast to finish and try the recording.
- If everything looks right, wait a few minutes. Rate limits and extraction bugs are both temporary.
